Nicholas Griffin Sculptor of Material Relationships in Landscapes
Artist's Statement
I strive to understand my place in the world by exploring the relationships between my work, chosen landscapes and myself. I construct portable observatories, floating and flying sculptural objects, and take them into the sculptural landscapes of South Wales, Cumbria and similar places. I started weaving in rattan and willow, but have recently turned to synthetic plastics, both alone and in combination with natural materials. I photograph and film my sculptures in these landscapes.
In an attempt to explain my activities I have experimented with narrative and performance, in which I portrayed myself as an eccentric psychogeographer. My experiences in the landscape are simultaneously serious and amusing, a mixture I am attempting to articulate in my work for the gallery.
I am strongly influenced by the prehistoric remains (Neolithic and early Bronze Age), with which I share my landscapes, and believe that many of them share features of contemporary Land Art.
My artistic influences are Richard Long, Chris Drury and James Turrell.
